One of the most easily recognizable landmarks in Oahu, and Hawaii in general, Diamond Head is a dormant volcano that offers a fairly straightforward trail with great views of Waikiki and the surrounding area. If you are not kama'aina, a Hawaii resident, then you will have to make a reservation for entry and parking. You can do so at the state website here. It is one of the first trails we did with our older daughter, and, at 3 years old, she regularly completes it without any assistance from us!

The beginning of the trail is paved but a constant incline |
The trailhead and parking area offer water fountains and bathrooms as well as a small store. The trail itself starts off fairly easy and paved with a slight incline that does increase the closer you get to the summit. Once you reach the base of the crater, the trail changes from paved to a rockier path along a series of switchbacks.

Trail on the switchbacks |
At the end of the switchbacks you will find the first viewpoint immediately preceding the first set of stairs. These stairs lead to a tunnel through the Crater, which ends with a choice: another set of 100 stairs or a rest point. If you choose the stairs, they will end in a spiral staircase which lead to one of the bunkers just below the summit. Alternatively the rest spot includes a much smaller staircase immediately followed by a flatter path. Following that route, you can either continue straight to another viewpoint or turn right and go up two larger staircases to reach the summit. The bunkers at the very top of the summit were dismantled a few years ago but you can still climb up to see the view.

Main summit route stairs |
Depending on the time of day you begin your hike, you could end up with very little shade, and absolutely none as you move towards the summit. I'd highly recommend bringing enough water, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect you from the strong sun in Hawaii.

For most people, the trail will take 1-2 hours which includes stops at the view points and time to take photos. There are no bathrooms at the top so be sure to fill your water and use the facilities before you begin!
Travel Tip: If you are going to do this hike, or travel to Hawaii in general, please be sure to respect the 'aina, the land, and neighbors of the hikes and beaches you are visiting. Do your research and ensure the trail is within your capabilities and you are able to safely complete the hike. Follow any posted signs regarding parking or trail rules and please please do not leave any valuables in your car!
